Can ACM Panels Be Used to Renovate an Existing Building?

Phoenix Metals • November 4, 2026

Updating an older building’s exterior can improve its appearance and give the property a new lease on life. Aluminum composite material (ACM) panels are one option for refreshing façades, entrances and architectural features. But before choosing a finish, property owners should find out whether the existing wall can support the proposed upgrade and what work may be needed behind the panels.

At Phoenix Metals, we’ve supplied and fabricated metal products in Calgary since 1978. Our work includes ACM fabrication, metal cladding and project-specific components such as trims and flashings. For retrofit projects, the right panel choice depends on the building, the plans and the requirements confirmed by the project’s design professionals.

Start by assessing the existing wall

A new exterior finish does not correct problems hidden behind the old one. Before planning ACM panels, have the existing wall assessed for its condition, structure and moisture-related issues. The project team needs to understand what the new cladding will attach to and whether repairs or other work are needed first.

This assessment should be handled by the appropriate qualified construction professional. A metal fabricator can work from approved project drawings, but the project’s architect, engineer, or other qualified professional must review the complete wall assembly and structural requirements.

Understand what the panels do and what they don’t

ACM panels provide a smooth, finished surface and can be fabricated for building façades and architectural features. They are one part of an exterior wall system, not a substitute for the wall’s structure, insulation, air barrier or moisture-management layers.

That distinction matters in renovations. The project team should decide how the proposed panels fit with the existing wall and what changes, if any, are required behind them. Our ACM panel fabrication service supports projects that require custom panels built to project specifications.

Check openings, edges and transitions

Windows, doors, corners, rooflines, and material changes all need careful planning. These details affect both the finished appearance and how different parts of the exterior meet. Existing openings may not align with a new panel layout, and older trim or flashing may need to be replaced or adapted.

Before fabrication, the team should coordinate measurements and details across the façade. Phoenix Metals fabricates metal cladding components, including trims and flashings, based on project drawings or confirmed measurements. Our Calgary metal cladding page explains how ACM panels and other metal cladding options can be used with project-specific components.

Confirm the required panel and fire performance

Not every ACM product is appropriate for every building. Panel core and fire-performance requirements depend on the project and the complete wall assembly. Owners should have the project specifications reviewed and confirm the required materials and documentation with their design professional or applicable authority before ordering.

Phoenix Metals can fabricate approved materials according to project specifications; compliance depends on the complete assembly, installation and requirements that apply to the building. For background on panel cores, see our guide to [polyethylene and fire-rated ACM panels](/polyethylene-vs-fire-rated-acm-panels).

Plan for the work around the building

A façade renovation may affect entrances, sidewalks, parking areas and day-to-day operations. Before work begins, owners and contractors should discuss access, site measurements, material delivery, installation sequencing and how the building will remain usable during construction.

The scope should also clarify who is responsible for design, engineering, permits, installation and coordination with other trades. Phoenix Metals supplies cladding products and provides custom fabrication from its Calgary facility. Installation availability depends on the project’s location, schedule and scope, so confirm responsibilities early.

Bring the project team together before fabrication

ACM panels can be part of a building renovation, but the decision should follow an assessment of the existing wall and clear project specifications. Once the team understands wall condition, panel layout, openings, fire requirements, and project responsibilities, it can plan the work and avoid late changes.

Phoenix Metals works with contractors, property owners and project teams on metal cladding and custom fabrication in Calgary. If you’re considering ACM for an existing building, review our ACM panel options, then contact our team with your project details and drawings. We can discuss the fabrication scope and the information needed to move toward a quote.
